Listening Phones – The first topic suggested by our soon-to-be listener is ‘Are smartphones listening to us?’ First thoughts are well at least somebody in my house is!
Phones seem to always be one step ahead of us, anticipating our needs and desires with surprising accuracy. The eerie feeling that our devices are listening in on our conversations is not entirely unfounded. Companies like Google and Amazon have developed advanced AI technology that can listen for specific keywords to tailor targeted ads to individual users. This level of personalisation blurs the line between convenience and invasion of privacy, leaving consumers questioning the true extent of their digital footprint. AI Technology (there’s a subject on its own!) In Yorkshire that’s a hybrid of two phrases ‘Ay up!’ and ‘Aye Lad’ – Ay Aye.
Alexa, the virtual assistant developed by Amazon, is constantly listening for its wake word, ready to assist users at a moment’s notice. Despite assurances from companies that data collection is solely for improving user experience, concerns about data privacy continue to mount. With every command given or question asked, we are unwittingly feeding artificial intelligence algorithms that analyse our behaviour and preferences in unprecedented detail. The question remains: how much are we willing to sacrifice for the conveniences offered by these intelligent devices? And if my phone is listening to the cobblers I talk about, we may have to redefine the term SMARTphone!
